Description
Disraeli Gears is the second studio album by the British “power trio” rock band Cream. Recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York City it was released in the US by ATCO, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records and by Reaction Records in the UK on 2 November 1967.
The album contains eleven tracks, two of which, “Strange Brew” and “Sunshine of Your Love” along with their B-sides “Tales of Ulysses” and SWLBR” were released as 45rpm singles. The consisted of: Eric Clapton-lead, rhythm, 12 string guitar, vocals - Jack Bruce-bass, piano, harmonica, vocals – Ginger Baker-drums, percussion, vocals.
In contrast to much of the bands work the album is mainly short, self contained songs with none of the improvisation and jamming for which the band was known for onstage. It is considered by critics as one of the greatest albums of all time. Best described by Chris Jones, writing for the BBC, the album is “a perfect encapsulation of the point where blues got psychedelic and in turn got heavy”. In 1999 Disraeli Gears was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Voted #182 in Colin Larkin’s – All Time Top 1000 albums (2000). Ranked #114 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2003 & 2012). VH1 named it 87th greatest album of all time (2001). And the album won Classic Rock of Honors Award for Classic Album (2008)
